Restaurant Restroom Deep Clean and Wax

A Common Problem…

My staff cleans the restrooms with bleach, yet they still smell like urine… what gives?

The short simple answer is that your employees are not likely to spend more then 2 minutes cleaning your #restrooms. This half-ass 2 to 3 minute cleaning can make restrooms look decent but they do Not address the Cause of the smells. The smells are usually caused by pee residue on the underside of the toilet and the wall behind it. But sometimes it can also be from the floor drain or the caulk around fixtures is wore out and toilet smells are seeping up from under the toilet. There… you just learned a “trade secret”! That one I don’t mind sharing because most people won’t detail clean (and wax) their own toilet let alone one used by the public! 😀 YES, I worked at a Dunkin & Panera back in 2000-2002… I did cleaning and curbside. Fun times. LOL The Panera actually had me cleaning different locations when inspections were due soon. So I’ve seen my share of how employees clean restrooms. Personally, I won’t eat at a place if their restroom is nasty… it’s more of a “if they don’t clean the obvious”, what does their Back of House look like? I pretty much have this down to a science at this point… pre-spray, wait 7 – 10 min, scrub by machine & by hand, rinse, touch up as needed, wax partition walls and walls behind fixtures (when possible)… this extra step helps you keep it cleaner by keeping the urine from sticking to areas that don’t get cleaned as often. Everything else gets sprayed with a deodorizing enzyme “eater” which removes any unseen traces of urine, sweat, spit, etc. that somehow escaped all my attempts to eradicate it! 🙂 Seriously… this cleaning solves the smell problem & in several cases so far, this also helps with those pesky #drainflies that many commercial restrooms have issues with. – Dave Lewerenz
